A Peak Behind the Curtain of Renew You (or No Way I Could’ve Pulled This Off by Myself…)

by Andrea on June 7, 2010

in Just for fun,Renew You

The first cycle of Renew You interviews has finished. No worries though, this is NOT the end. I will continue to do Renew You interviews throughout the year. I commit to at least one a month and I commit to continue bringing the work of greatly inspiring women to your attention (the new interviews will be part of the Blossom Now Kit too!).

I am both tired — 15 interviews in 5 weeks is no small feat — and totally juiced up. Of course I’m juiced up! If you heard any of these interviews, you are too. There’s plenty of inspiration there.

A project like this requires lots of hands to get going. I bet you don’t think much about that when you pull up a website, do you? I didn’t a year ago.

I want to share this with you for two reasons: One, I want to thank my collaborators — and hey, if any of them gets work because of this reference, great! They all deserve it. Two, I want you to realize that you, like me, also need help if you want to accomplish a project.  One of my favorite business coaches says that Sinatra didn’t move his own piano. Makes sense, doesn’t it?

There’s a third reason I want to share this with you. My colleagues ask me constantly about my brand, my online image, my projects… “All seems so well put together… How do you do it?” No, I am not doing business coaching. Not for now, not in the near future. I am a holistic health coach for women and that’s the hat I wear all the time. But if you are curious about who helps me do it, you can take this as a good list of resources (there’s no affiliate links in this blog post).

OK, here we go. These are the people behind the curtain of Renew You — many of them help me on a continuous basis.

  • First of all, my mom. When you get to know me better you’ll realize I always refer back to my mom. She’s definitely one of my heroes. She worked really hard for 35+ years. Coincidentally, she was a biology and chemistry teacher, which is, in a way, what I am too. She didn’t see that one coming when I graduated from school and went on to play bass guitar for a living — and neither did I. Nowadays, Aurora spends most of her time knitting and traveling. She has created a beautiful life for herself and I feel blessed for that.

How’s she involved in this project? Well, she has always, always, always believed in me and given me her unconditional support. Makes a difference, you know?
  • Scott is my husband, but more importantly, he’s my best friend. Scott has been the head of my ad hoc advisory board throughout my career. He’s a big idea guy and he can keep his cool under (almost) any circumstance. He’s great at putting things in perspective when I get impatient, frustrated, or disappointed. We have a pretty out-of-the-box relationship, but somehow it works.
  • Kate is my multi-talented, totally smart and totally awesome friend. She’s a massage therapist, and she’s a doula, and she’s a great editor, oh, and she speaks French. She can also knit and sew and she’s done pottery and construction work.

Kate has been my assistant in live workshops and cooking classes. She makes my life much easier when I start to feel overwhelmed. For this project, she created all the summaries for the Blossom Now Kit. Oh, and she edited and proofread this blog post.
  • Kelly is another great friend and collaborator of mine and another renaissance woman. She has a special talent as a writer though. She can write an article for the New York times as well as she can write a witty tweet. Kelly was in charge of social media for this project. Did you see all those great  #RenewYou tweets?  Yep, it’s her.

Nowadays Kelly is using all her talents to help people write ebooks and she’s doing great. If you want to write an e-book, you should contact her.

  • Thought Lead is a consulting firm that helps people with a triple-bottom-line and an inspiring mission play a bigger game online. They’re talented and market-savvy young people.

For 6 months, the Thought Lead team (Sam, Steve, Aterah and Christiana) has been helping me with all things Renew You: strategy, branding, design, technical set up, copy… and bad jokes (sorry Sam, you’re a much better marketer than a comedian).
  • Amber Miller is my virtual assistant. I love her because she gets what I need without much explanation. She’s an Aweber, 1ShoppingCart, Wishlist Member and Instant Teleseminar guru. If you need help with any of these tools and want to save yourself some time and frustration, you should call her.
  • Dave Navarro is the launch coach. He’s just chock-full of original and creative ideas to promote online and he makes me feel like marketing is actually fun.
  • I get technical help from Neil Matthews and Ric Nunez. They’re both knowledgeable and fast, fast, fast. You appreciate that when your website gets weird and you don’t have the slightest idea of what to do about it.
  • Scott Webb is the very-patient-with-me designer who beautified the Renew You newsletter. He also designed the True Nourishment one, but you haven’t seen that one yet. You will soon!
  • The Renew You experts: Obviously I couldn’t have done much if these wonderful women had not accepted my invitation to participate. If you haven’t had the chance, take some time to check out their websites. There are links to all of them in the Renew You page.

I have learned and gotten inspired from each one of you. Thank you!
  • And last, but not least, I thank YOU. You are the reason why I do what I do. I want to contribute to your life, but I can’t do that unless you let me :-), so I thank you for giving me that chance and I hope you’ll stick around for a long while.

So here’s what I need you to do
You see the comments section down there? Please answer these questions:

Good Morning! My biggest challenge currently is trying to de-clutter my life and my house. With life running full speed ahead, I find that taking the time to de-clutter and get my projects and to-do’s crossed of my list is tough. I would love to have a topic cover de-cluttering and changing habits. The expert that I would love to hear is Erin Doland from Unclutterer.
Thanks!

My biggest challenge is finding time for all the things that I would like to prioritize! Between school, work, starting a business, my fourth month old son, working out, cooking, and self care it is very difficult to find enough time or eveything. This is something I am trying to perfect every day!
A topic that I would love for you to address is eating healthy and organic on a budget. I want to buy the very best ingredients for my self and my family but have been finding it hard to stay under budget.
I would love to hear from Debbie Ford about finding and following your vision!

1) I procrastinate something awful. Even as I type this I am using it as a (lovely) way to avoid beginning a project I feel unsure about how to Knock the Socks off of it or create the Kapow factor I assured my friend I could. Hmmm, maybe that’s my biggest challenge – my mouth believes I am fabulous but my inner self hasn’t quite caught onto the game yet. In short – I am a procrastinator hiding behind my clutter bug tendencies. Please Help!
2) Procrastination. Diving into the arena of what’s truly behind this scallywag of a behaviour.
3)There’s a great coach by the name of Shane Kempton. http://www.shanekempton.com. I met Shane via FB when he offered a pay-it-forward coaching session and I was a lucky recipient. He changed my life in 30minutes. I don’t have the funds to connect with Shane one to one but would love to hear more from him – his tips and suggestions have enabled me to continue my progress.
Thank you for your dedication and the welcoming layout of your site. I always breathe a sigh of relief and feel myself relax a bit when your emails come in or I open the link.

With appreciation and blessings,

Sonja

My biggest challenge when it comes to food, diet, or lifestyle? Is taking the time to cook wholesome meals. I tend to eat processed , ready to eat, microwavable solutions way too often. I want to teach my children better values when it comes to food ,and teach them how to nourish themselves properly for better health.

The topic I would you love Renew You to address is how to combine a mental and physical balance to create good health. I tend to “know” what I should be doing , but can not attain the mental control it takes to follow through. Wanting to work out is great, but getting your mind and body in synch to actually perform the exercise is key.

Is there a specific expert you’d like to hear? Who? The person I would like to hear more from is Laura Klein.

Thank you for allowing me to share my views with you. I hope that it is helpful to you. Have a happy and healthy day!

My biggest challenge is sugar cravings. And also permanently changing habits.

The topic I’d like to hear most is identifying and overcoming fear. I believe fear of some kind is what holds most people, including myself, back from committing to desires.

I don’t know of any experts to recommend.

My greatest challenge in the world of food, diet and lifestyle is consistency. I’ve benefitted from so much wonderful input from so many fabulous thinkers and innovators but I need help keeping balanced, grounded and true to my ideas and ideals. How do I change the fragmentation I feel some of the time?

The topic I would love to see explored is self sabotage.

1.What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to food, diet, or lifestyle?
Food/diet: Grabbing snacks at work. My job is a daily beating & I often reach for the “treats” my coworkers so generously share (despite having brought my own food) b/c they have a psychological fix my healthier snacks don’t. Dairy–I love milk which is why I don’t keep it in the house.
Lifestyle: Honoring healthy & positive choices I’ve made instead of giving in. My biggest challenges here are remaining motivated & committed instead of giving into discouragement
1.Which topic would you love Renew You to address?
Keeping life simple, balanced & keeping clutter to a minimum.
1.Is there a specific expert you’d like to hear? Who?
Nobody comes to mind. Thank you:-)

1. My biggest challenge with diet is staying on track once I have been doing well with eating whole food balanced meals. The schedule gets crazy and then frustration mounts that I haven’t been doing well and things go down from there.
2. I love all the topics covered so far, maybe something about taking all these wonderful speakers ideas and making them work together is some kind of a balance – time management maybe would be fitting?
3. Sophie Uliano – from Gorgeously Green – she has wonderful ideas and seems very knowledgeable in green living topics.

Thanks for this series – it has been a very eye opening experience – I really connected with two of the speakers and the others had excellent information!

1. My biggest food challenge is that I hate cooking, shopping & planning meals. I end up doing frozen meals or meal replacements just to avoid it which I know isn’t healthy for me. If i finally cook something, i don’t eat it because i get full while making it. I know its all mental but i haven’t found a way to get past it.

2. Female reproductive health issues (endometriosis, etc.)

For the last year or so I’ve been discovering a spiritual life and loving it, the biggest challenge for me though, is although I know it’s best to live from the heart to keep ego based thoughts of fear away, staying there at all times and not making errors is sometimes difficult after a lifetime of thinking and speaking from the head!

For me the biggest topic to learn more about is staying in your heart centred space and knowing when you claim I am, it’s yours baby!

The person that illustrates this in the most fun, most touching way is Dee Wallace, I love listening to her talking about claiming the I am and staying with what you feel.

1. For me, it’s just staying on track. I know all the right things I need to do and I have many tools available to me. I often find myself saying, “Well, I’ll eat right and take care of myself after ________.” You can fill in the blank with any general thing that might come up. The fact of the matter is life is always full of complications and if I wait for those complications to disappear before starting a routine of taking care of myself, it’ll never happen.

2. I would like to see a session on meditation. I’m just delving into meditation and am trying to learn as much as possible. Also, maybe a session on yoga, which I’ve been practicing off and on over the past 10 years. I am now learning the philosophy and background of yoga, which is quite interesting.

3. I don’t really know any experts to recommend because I don’t really know any experts. Sorry!

1) My biggest challenge when it comes to food is late night sweet cravings. I can do well all day long and then night comes and I want to cuddle up and have a tea party with my ‘TV’ friends. My biggest challenge when it comes to diet is sorting out all the different approaches to diet and finding what is best for me as a cancer survivor. My biggest challenge when it comes to lifestyle is finding time for me. As the soul fulltime caregiver for my mother, a wife, a mother, a friend, and new IIN student it is difficult to carve out time to nurture myself, mind, body and soul.
2) The topic I would love Renew You to address is how to manage Caregiver issues. Since most women are caregivers at some stage of their life. I think that it is a topic area that would be useful for a large number of people. We often know what we should do but don’t know how to implement it in our daily lives and do it without guilt.
3) The specific expert you’d like to hear is Kara Richardson Whitely. She wrote ‘Fat Woman on the Mountain’. She was obese and yet wanted to climb mountains. She directed her weight loss (120 lbs) to a purpose and climbed Kilimanjaro as a fund-raiser for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. She is an inspiration to those of us who want to lose weight but need a cause greater than ourselves to propel us forward and in the end find the value in ourselves. This is my dream challenge to join her on her next climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro as a fund-raiser for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. I wonder if I would be the first recorded 52 yr old breast cancer survivor to reach the summit at Uhuru peak?

1.my greatest challenge is the financial stress which causes me to trend toward an emotional state. I’m an emotional eater and can manage through my days reasonably well but when evening comes and the thoughts rise I want my old comfort, food.
2. Renew you is doing a masterful job of addressing all the issues that we seem to face. I am having a lot of trouble moving what I know in my head to be true, to a place in my heart that will help me rise above the overwhelming feelings useless embarassment to others.
3. I don’t know who to suggest.

3. I’ll leave that up to the you, the expert.

Biggest lifestyle challenge: balance, balance, balance! I’ve joined a competitive dragonboat racing team which practices 3x/week, plus I do circuit training and extra conditioning on my own. This is on top of a 45 – 50 hr per week job and a husband who is feeling less and less a part of my life (and I can’t blame him).

Topics I’d like to hear: how to determine what you want, how to prepare for impending midlife changes (changes in skin, the dreaded menopot, etc.) and developing/improving friendships with both sexes.

Experts to recommend: I know a lady that, while not a known expert, has a very inspirational and story. She immigrated to the states then had a very personal setback, yet was able to persevere and build herself and her sons a very successful business. If you are interested I can email you all her name, web site and a little about why she is so motivating (I don’t want to include it here, out of respect for her privacy).

1 my biggest challenge with healthy living probably has to be living around so many people who don’t understand my decisions (raising a 2 yr old) and/or are not ready to make positive changes in their own lives. Thankfully my husband isn’t one of them! But it’s pretty much just us in our circle :(

2 a topic I would like to hear covered….metabolism of different fats/sugars/protein macronutrients (saturated/monounsaturated/omega 6 & 3/glucose/fructose/dextrose/artificial sweeteners/etc.) & sources (grass fed/organically grown vs grain fed/conventionally grown) and how they affect hormones weight gain, but of course in as simplistic layman terms as possible.

3 any of the real food bloggers that I’ve come across would be great. Katie from Kitchen Stewardship has been recently studying phytates in grains talking with several experts to figure out what science is out there on digestion of grains and may be a wealth of information :)

1. What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to food, diet, or lifestyle?
I have many years of life-experience. You would think that at this point I would have a grasp on how food and diet affect me. I don’t. Having spent the first portion of my existence on surviving, raising children and more surviving I, like so many others, have not found ME! The biggest challenge in all three areas is allowing my psyche to even consider ME over all the other “duties” taking priority.
2. Which topic would you love Renew You to address?
Whenever I am out in a public atmosphere, such as a party, I am amazed at how easy it is for today’s young women to socialize with abandon – no fears of judgment or repercussions for their love of life. I would luv to see suggestions on how to bring ease to my self-deprecating conscience.

My biggest challenge when it comes to lifestyle is maintaining health and balancing my wellness wheel (family, spirituality, career, health). I WANT to improve my brain. Now, I actually exercise for mental and physical health!! I stopped negative thought that went like this “I hate to excercise” into “I need to exercise and raise my heart rate 20+ minutes each day or at least 4 x’s a week”. I carve out “ME TIME” so I can give others “YOU TIME”!!! Sometimes I feel guilty working on my health instead of my house! PRIORITIES are my toughest challenge!

Which topic would you love Renew You to address? Time Management and handling daily moments. Making the most out of precious time hear on earth. TV is a huge distraction and so is the TELEPHONE – UGH! Can’t forget another time waster, or time relaxer, SHOPPING! HELP ME CHOOSE RIGHT!!

I would LOVE to hear Eckhart Tolle!

1. My biggest challenge is making the time to exercise and keeping inspired everyday. Raising two kids; 12 and 8 years old in the old Colombian style. Yes, I’m also from Colombia! …(And that means home cooking meals; lunch and dinner…I have given up hot coco and arepas for breakfast) Running for their extracurricular activities, helping my husband with his business and trying to take my decorating business off the ground doesn’t give me much time to exercise nor the inspiration to do it.

2.I would like Renew You to address strategies on how to get ride of poisoning, negative, envious friendships. I can’t say no to people in need but I hate when I feel taken advantage of.
3. I can’t think of any person in particular but Stephanie Mc Williams always inspires and teaches me new Feng shui tricks.
Congratulations on your fabulous work. I wish you great success!!! Mucha suerte de todo corazon. Que disfrute Colombia!

What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to food, diet, or lifestyle?
Well… I just saw a program on TV that gave me a great insight about myself. Social Anxiety. OMG. That’s what it’s been all these years (I’m 49)… the reason I haven’t been able to persue interests… dreams… I’m lucky in that I can always go to work, but other than that, my life is pretty small. Too “shy” (so I thought) to do things I wanted to do… go the places I wanted to go… be the person I wanted to be! I’m ready to accept the challenge, but I’ll need help. Thanks for being here!

Which topic would you love Renew You to address? Being grounded and moving forward from there. Opening your heart and living from it. Living your dreams (but I think you’re addressing all this already! ;-) )

Is there a specific expert you’d like to hear? Who? I’d love to hear from Lilias Folan – yoga “guru” from the late 70s… she’s got such a beautiful, gentle energy, and still so much to share about heart-centered living.

Thank you!

Hi there–thanks for this opportunity :)
My challenge of the moment is simplifying…this includes things like getting rid of “stuff” so I can love the stuff I have instead of being swallowed by it; getting rid of my toxic job by finding a way to make a living doing what I love; keeping my food wholesome and my movement routine and natural.

I’d like more on wholesome, natural foods–that aren’t too woowoo…whatever happened to good old food?!?

I think it would be fun to hear Jorge Cruise talk about working small chunks of movement into everyday life–we’re all so busy (and full of excuses LOL) that any regimented exercise routine loses momentum after just a few days…

1. My biggest challenge is staying with a healthy, nourishing diet when my work load and stress is increased. Then I fall back into old patterns of grabbing what is closest. I tried Roses Power Salad and can’t look back. I wish I had other women who shared the passion for nourishing their bodies with healthy eating.

2. I was recently introduced to compassionate communication based on Non Violent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg…it is a wonderful way to offer myself empathy and recognize my feelings and needs.

3. Jan Chozen Bays MD author of Mindful Eating

Thanks to all speakers for sharing yourselves and being an encouragement to me. You are my new best friends!! ss

My biggest challange is addressing my fear of being successful. I’ve struggled for so long and have tried everything that I’m finding out it’s about so much more that what my hand brings to my mouth. A topic I would like to learn more about it natural energy boosters. I seem to struggle daily with lethargy. It’s so cylical. I’m overweight so I lack energy which in turn makes me depressed, which leads to munching, and so on! I would love to hear from Karly Randolph Pitman. Her website is so interesting and I would like to hear more from her. Thanks for reading!

1. My biggest challenge has always been eating chocolate and ice cream and other sweets, especially at night and also during the day if I need energy.
2. I would love to see you address why most women have low self esteem, and what to do about it. I would also like to see you address more on perfectionism, especially apppearance perfectionism.
3. I would love to hear from Alan Cohen who wrote “The Dragon Doesn;t
Live Here Anymore.

Thanks Andrea,
I was not able to listen to most of the program, but the part that I needed the most, which was Jennifer Louden, I did hear. I took out a few of her books from the library, but have not had a chance to read them.
I found her program awesome, so I imagine the rest of the Renew You was just as good, and would love to win a copy. Thank You for your hard work in putting everything together. I know that everybody that took part was really appreciative.

1. My biggest challenges are being consistent , procrastination and emotional eating (when in a stressful situation I can’t avoid). I cut back on my sweets until the stress hits me and then I go everything until I make myself feel terrible. I tend to be very insecure so I procratinate on things that I find a bit much for me.

2. Getting beyond procrastination and leaving emotional eating behind.

3. Not really sure – Connie Bennett

1. Biggest challenge? I have a couple of big ones. I CRAVE sugar. I had a physical injury to my knees that makes it hard to walk, let alone do conventional exercises. I dislike the taste of most of the things touted as “truly healthy”. (I;m still working on this … but the truth is I really don’t like the taste(s).)

2. What topics? Exercise for those with physical problems would be really helpful.

3. Particular experts? Marc David, author of The Slow Down Diet. Mama Gena. The author of a book that just came out recently … What to Wear for the Rest of Your Life.

Love your work! Thanks!
