Ice Cream and Hugs, Martinis and Yoga

Have you ever wonder about the specific events or situations that trigger your sugar *and/or alcohol* cravings? For example, a martini to unwind after work, or a pint of ice cream after a fight with someone you love?

Sugar and alcohol, just like medicine, provide us with needed relief from illness, only illness sometimes is not physical, but spiritual. Any stressful situation or event creates unbalance and chaos in the body. In time, these bits of stress build up and become illness. Spiritual illnesses thrive on sugar.

The good news is that there are many effective ways to relieve us in much more profound ways than sugar or alcohol could ever do. The trick is to keep some of these in mind and make them part of daily life, so they become as natural as ice cream and martinis.

Have a nourishing breakfast. You’d be surprised to see how much stress you can “save” yourself by starting the day with the right foods for you.

Take frequent breaks throughout the day. Little breaks to bring awareness to your breath, stretch your neck, drink some water. Many times I find myself in front of the computer thinking that I need some water, or I need to go to the bathroom, or I need to stretch my arms, and I neglect these messages that my body sends. This doesn’t result in increased productivity, but in increased anxiety that’s more difficult to deal with later on.

Find a form of movement that you like and practice frequently. Yoga, dancing, bike riding, tennis… There are so many! There’s gotta be something for you :-).

Spend time with friends and people that you care about. Let them be the sweetness you are looking for.

Consider getting a pet. Especially if you are single and live alone, having an animal to care for can be extremely healing.

Develop your spirituality. Explore concepts that you are curious about, be open-minded, practice gratefulness.

Why don’t you…
Sit down with paper and pen. Close your eyes and think about stuff you could do that might actually help you forget about the ice cream. This will be your own “Soul Nourishing Menu.” Where are you *really* going to find that suga’?

And if you are in the Hudson Valley (NY) you should totally come to the Sugar Liberation workshop on Oct 28. Yes, that’s 3 days before Halloween… So that you can start practicing right away.
